Layering Light: Why One Overhead Fixture Isn't Enough
A single ceiling fixture rarely does a room justice. Layered lighting changes how a space feels at every hour.
Most rooms benefit from at least three layers of light: ambient (overall room light), task (focused light for specific activities), and accent (light that highlights a feature or creates mood).
Pendant and chandelier fixtures are often the ambient layer, but relying on them alone tends to produce flat, even lighting that doesn't shift with the time of day.
Table and floor lamps add warmth at a human scale, and are usually the easiest way to soften a room in the evening without adjusting the main fixture.
Dimmers, where available, do more for a room's atmosphere than almost any single furniture decision — they let the same space serve very different moods.
